When the bearings go they typically make a growling noise. Try sawing the wheel back and forth (in a safe location.. ie parking lot) and listen for a change in the sound. A squeak while making a hard turn might be a tire rub?
I pulled the steering swivel myself, bought a bearing on line for $35 and had it pressed in by a local shop for $10.
