The 900 only got better with time, so a '92-'94 900T is a good choice. Stick with the turbo - the normally-aspirated engine grew to the less-than-desireable 2.1L.

Unless the car has been incredibly abused, the turbo should be fine. Saabs don't eat turbos, and they should last the long life of the car.

What should you look for? Maintenance Records. No records, walk, nay, run away. I don't car how pretty the car looks. This will be a 10 year old car with a few miles on the clock. An abused, under-maintained car will work fine for years, but it's life will be shorter. The difference between a cared-for car and an abused one shows up at 60-80K.

Don't sweat if the car has had work done, assuming it was normal stuff like water pumps and the like. (versus, say, frame bending). You want to see a continuous list of oil changes, coolant changes, brake fluid changes, and minor repairs. Just because the car looks pretty, don't assume it's been maintained - I know folks that'll pay $75 for detailing, but won't part with $19.95 for an oil change.

Make sure the coolant and brake fluid have been changed regularly - on the order of every two years (best) to every four (not great, but at least it got done). If the coolant and brake fluid in the car now is the same as when it came from Sweden, you're pretty close to some astounding repair bills.

Treated right, the engine is pretty bulletproof. Listen for transmission pinion wear - drive at speed on a flat road, accelerate gently and listen for a growl that goes away when you back off the gas. A clutch can last for 200K or 20K, depending on the driver.

Tops do wear, and the hydraulics can be a trouble spot. But wear is visible and if the top won't work, or works poorly, you'll know it.

Other than abuse, there aren't any major trouble spots. If you don't know the OG900 that well, find a mechanic that knows Saabs, and pay him/her/it a few bucks to check it out. It'll be well worth it.

Good luck!
