Are studless snows needed?

Aren't all the tires you're looking at considered "studless" snow tires? I know 2 guys running the Artic Alpins (1 has an '01 BMW 3-series AWD & was previously running Blizzaks, & the other has a '98 Corvette) & they both swear they'll never use any other winter tire. However, neither of them will drive them as fast as summer tires on dry pavement, & they both commented on how quickly they wear.
Do you need (or simply want?) that level of winter performance? The best year-round tires for my 1hr commute outside of Denver were the BFG Advantage GT tires from Sam's Club (they carry 2 different Advantage series tires; the GTs are MUCH better in the snow). The highways out here are usually cleared pretty quickly, but the roads in all the towns are usually cleared by "sun plow," so they take a while to thaw out.
