Take a read of the bid process.
From Ebay - On Proxy Bidding:
Here's how it works:
1.When you place a bid, you enter the maximum
amount you'd be willing to pay for the item.
Your maximum amount is kept confidential
from other bidders and the seller.
2.The eBay system compares your bid to those
of the other bidders.
3.The system places bids on your behalf, using
only as much of your bid as is necessary to
maintain your high bid position (or to meet the
reserve price). The system will bid up to your
maximum amount.
4.If another bidder has a higher maximum, you'll
be outbid. BUT, if no other bidder has a higher
maximum, you win the item. And you could
pay significantly less than your maximum
price!
Bid Increments:
Current Price = CP
Bid Increment = BI
CP $0.01 - $0.99 BI $0.05
CP $1.00 - $4.99 BI $0.25
CP $5.00 - $24.99 BI $0.50
CP $25.00 - $99.99 BI $1.00
So let's say you bid $48.50, and some other bidder put in a bid at $48.25. You outbid him, but the automatic bidding can only go as high as your max. You only have to bid higher than the next guy, NOT his bid plus one bid increment. That's one idea... Or you had an itme that started (or was at $xx.50 before you bid on it. The next guy was at somewhere between $47.50 and $48.49. You'll only see the next guy's bid when the action ends, though.
