Hello. I have a 1990 900S, 16V. I had the water pump, hoses, thermostat, belts, and coolant changed by a mechanic last week. When I drove it home, everything seemed fine. The heat coming from the vents was the usual furnace. I had the temperature knob turned up all of the way. The next day on my way home from work, I got stuck in traffic. After a while, I noticed that the hot air coming from the vents started to get colder very quickly. It eventually was as cold as the air outside. I looked at the temperature gauge and it was above 1/2 and slowly rising because I wasn't moving. The radiator fan kicked in when the gauge was at 2/3. It was stop and crawl for the rest of the way home and the heat didn't come back on. I checked the coolant level and it was between the min and max lines. After a few hours, I got back into my car and went out. The temperature gauge was at 1/4 and the heat came on instantly. The heat didn't lessen the rest of the evening. The drive to work, in little to no traffic, the next morning was fine also. On my drive home, I was stuck in traffic again and the heat cut off again after being stopped for a while. It seems to happen when the temperature gauge is above 1/2. I checked the coolant level and I didn't notice any change.
I am taking it back to the mechanic at the end of the week. I mentioned the symptoms to the mechanic and he didn't seem to have a cause or a solution. I think that the coolant system wasn't properly bled when the fluid was refilled. Are there any other things I can look at myself or tell the mechanic to check out? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
