My '90 holds about 17 gallons

But if I fill it as soon as the Low Fuel light comes on I can only put in about 14 gallons. When I was commuting 65 miles a day I was getting about 34mpg, so I could easily go another 100 miles before filling (gave me another day-&-1/2 between fill-ups). With my current job I bike to work most days, & for errand-running I get only about 22mpg, so now I usually fill up as soon as the light comes on.

You could always fill up a 2-1/2 gal gas can, reset your trip odometer as soon as the Low Fuel light comes on, & give it a test. If you know your current average mpg, you can go just close to that many more miles & probably not run it dry (eg, if you're getting 30mpg you can try going another 100-120 miles.) If you cut it close enough, you can fill at a gas station & get a good total number of gallons (I once put in 17.1 gallons, which I think is what my manual says is my max). The advantage here is that you'll know exactly how much margin you really have. Just don't forget to fill the gas can first...
