Greg/John,
My '90 had the same EXACT problem as both of you: after about 20-40 min of hwy driving it was "stuck" in 5th & took several really good yanks to get it out, & then it wouldn't go back into 5th until the car had been parked long enough to allow the drivetrain to cool down.

One of my mechanics said he sees it "a lot" due to a burr being raised on the shift shaft, which starts to catch on a seal (I think). He said he drops the side plates surrounding this shaft & runs his fingers along it to find the burr ('cuz it's too small to see). Then he takes a strip of emery cloth & polishes it off, puts the side plates back on, & refills the tranny. He said this is ALWAYS the cure for the problem. However, when he did this on my car he found NO BURR.

What he DID find was "black" tranny fluid (his recommended fill at the time was 75wt gear oil) even though it had been changed twice in the previous 12k miles! So here's how he fixed my problem: He drained out the gear oil, put in 10W-30 dino motor oil & a can of "flush" treatment, drove it for about 30 min to an hour, drained it all out, repeated the process w/o the flush, & then filled it with BG Syncro Shift II. That was 2 yrs/25k miles ago (I now have 160k on it), & it's been shifting w/o problems ever since. As you might've guessed, I'll continue to use the Synchro Shift fluid as long as I have this tranny.

Keep in mind that the raised burr on the shift shaft was his "usual" observation for this 5th gear problem. He admitted that my fix was a first for him, based on his noticing my fluid's condition. Let me know if I can answer any other questions about this problem; I know how frustrating it is!
