First thing I would wonder is....does it do this when the tank is full? The fuel pump is submerged in a plastic conister that is located at the top of the fuel tank. A small pick-up pump fills the canister from the bottom of the tank. The small pump might fail, or the fuel hoses inside the canister could get messed up by oxygenated (alchohol) fuel. I've seen that happen. Result is the cannister is not being kept full of fuel. If your tank is FULL, the canister would be full just by siphoning. If you notice that this problem only occurs when the fuel tank is less than full, then I would suspect that problem.

Otherwise, as you suspected, I would suspect the fuel filter. I believe yours is under the car, near the rear axle. I believe there is only one fuel filter.

If none of that works, check the fuel pump pressure.
