Alternator starting to go? Weird electric problems

I replaced my alternator in the summer of 2001. It's been working fine up til now. I first noticed this around July. When I'm driving my car or stopped or whatever, the electric system has random bursts of energy. My lights get brighter, all of them, the fan blows faster. I can't believe that this is OK. Well when I first noticed it, it was very quick, like a second or two, then back to normal. Now, it's lasting up to 15 second intervals. For the last couple weeks it hardly happened, but now it's back. It happens about once every 5-8 minutes.
The other problem, if I'm stopped at a light, and it happens, it revs the RPM's high and my car tries to go forward! Very bad! Luckily it doensn't go much and I catch it and slam harder on the brakes.
I'm taking a safe guess when I think it's the alternator. Just wondering if anyone knows whats wrong or what needs to be replaced. My friend told me the brushes in the alternator? Are those easy to replace? Does that sound like the problem?
Thank you very much!
