Re: 1988 900S ABS? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 16 Jan 2003 13:27:10 In Reply to: 1988 900S ABS?, Rob [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 15 Jan 2003 21:13:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In 1988 the 900 went to the same brakes as the 9000, and the 9000 has ABS. That's why wheels from 87 and earlier 900s don't fit 88 and later 900, but 9000 wheels do.
It should be pretty easy to tell if you have ABS. Open the hood and look at the brake master cylinder. Do you see a large metal sphere (3-4 inch/diameter)? If yes, that's the ABS pressure accumulator. No sphere, no ABS.
Why wouldn't your car have ABS, but have a space for the light? Many reasons. Your '88 may have been built early in the model year - as early as Aug or Sept of '87. ABS was a running in-line change. They may have gone to a new instrument cluster with an ABS light, ABS still wasn't being installed on the assembly line. Maybe someone removed it because it had failed, and it was cheaper to go to the old system from a donor car.
