Just waiting for superbowl sunday (PARTY!) and remeniscing about the time I drove my first C900. 1995, living and working in LA, CA. At that time I didn't own a car, prefering to ride my custom classic euro 10 speed around. I also didn't live too far from work or from where I socialized, so the bike was a nice, healthy, money saving option. But then came time for a car.

Around the corner from where I lived was a used car lot that I walked past on my way to a coffee shop. Coffee drinkers, you know how it is with coffee - everything about it is ritualized, including the walk or drive and seeing all that you pass along the way. So in that lot were various 80's euro models. One light brown 82 900 n/a 4 door sat along the front row with it's front end facing out toward the sidewalk. The hood paint was already showing serious damage from heat and the windshield was slightly pitted. I later learned the owner lived and worked out in the desert and the car obviously saw a lot of blowing sand. Despite the wear I liked the look of that car at a profile and dead on. For weeks I looked at and admired it as it sat there doing nothing but collecting bird droppings from the family of birds living in the billboard sign directly above.

Then one day I took a look at it's rear end and made a sour face. While I've gotten acustomed to it since, I still think the 80's 900 rear end design isn't nearly as elegant as the front. For days I continued to look at it and walk around as I passed by. Then one day I asked to drive it. Now mind you, prior to that time the only cars I'd driven in Los Angeles were the company van, a friend's ragtop LeBaron (yuck) and a performance modified Honda Prelude. That Honda was a sensation to drive and well worth every $ the owner spent to upgrade.

My first impression of that 900 was how comfortable it felt sitting in the "cockpit." I was also surprised at how easily it started. I then took it for a nice leisurely cruise on the streets and freeway. Everything I (and no doubt all of you) now like about these cars was there then - the peppy response, the solid braking, easy turning, smooth ride, great road feel. Being an 82 with 175K miles, a slight engine and tranny noise was evident, but nowhere near as noisy as the Dodge van I drove around town. I also prefer hearing the engine and tranny on a manual car so as to guage it's general performance.

It was a very positive first impression. So much so I forked out the $1800 asking price right then and there. Hey, it's a CA car! No rust! I drove that car for 5 years around LA with little maintenance work needed and ended up parting it out to rebuild and restore the 82 900T 4 door I now drive. That car lives on in the form of a rebuilt front end, the dash, valve cover, cabin fan and the turn signal cluster.

And your first time?
