Here's my experience:
'80 900GLi (8v n/a) 145,000 miles: broadsided by camaro, engine still good
'83 900T (8v turbo) 225,000 miles: rust, electrical problems, engine still good- this one had a cracked cylinder head at 140,000
'86 900T (16v turbo) 205,000 miles: transmission failure, engine still good
'86 900 (8v n/a) 2??,??? miles (intermittant odometer said 190,000): transmission failure, engine still good
'86 SPG (16v turbo w/performance mods) 227,000 miles and still going strong. New head gasket at 200,000.
I have never heard of a c900 dying due to engine problems. Typically the last straw is collision damage, the transmission, electrical problems, or rust. I have seen a few c900's with more than 300,000 miles on the clock, and plan to do the same with my SPG.
