Get a long clean bag from a loaf of bread, place over the defect, and then duct tape either side of the metal rod, to seal it. Make sure you do this with rod in its most extended position, so you don't just rip the repair while turning a corner. That will allow you a bit of time.
Make sure bag is not so droppy that it gets ripped or caught on the axle.
