Suggestions to cut interior noise Posted by Saana88 [Email] (#207) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saana88) on Fri, 31 Jan 2003 00:09:46 In Reply to: Noisy engine, smittyg, Wed, 29 Jan 2003 12:26:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2.0l NA- last year for the good ol' 8 valve.
Manual- 700 miles since the conversion from the GDSB. Talk about reducing engine noise!
Just rolled over 158,000 miles/254,276.352 kilometers today- toot the horn and pat the dashboard for another advanced digit.
Before, with the BW-37 GDSB (slushbox), the car said RRREEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH at 100 km/hr. There was a whining noise from the final drive and a whole mess of engine noise. Good luck hearing the radio over that.
Now she just kinda humms- there's a very low frequency oscillation, cycling around every ten seconds, which I've found inherent in all 900 5 speeds I've driven (3). It's barely noticeable. I like it. She purrs. Of course, it might have had something to do with the 700 RPM drop in cruising speed.
At 100 km/hr, my C900 sounds like none of the above. She lacks the "stand clear of the closing doors" announcements of the NY subway. She lacks the proper Detroit Diesel noise of a city bus. I've never driven an Audi diesel, but I can assume the 900 has a little less tapping noise typical of diesels of that vintage.
As much as I love the Classics, she's a little louder than the NG 900. Limited comparison here- I have driven an NG 900 for around eight miles and don't remember much aside from not being able to keep the CE light off and the silly "test brake lights" display.
I've never driven a 9000. Sorry. Same applies to the Benz.
And finally, my C900 lacks the sucking, slurping noises of SUVs.
My C900 sounds like nothing else but a classic 900. There was a post up a few months back about guys and girls driving around in 900 turbo 5 speeds in a tunnel with the windows down just to listen to the beautiful noise. Although I've very rarely driven a turbo (pour your pity donations here) I can say that the Saabers in my family have been suffering from primary-chain-noise-withdrawal prior to the conversion. Now all I have to do is pull a quick downshift to second gear (at reasonable speeds) and it is music to my ears. Nothing else sounds like it.
Another long response- I hope you all don't mind my typing habit.
