200k miles, 8v engine, 5 speed. Moving the gear shift lever around, even when it's mild outside, has become very difficult. Kind of like it's stuck in mud. Shifts are getting very tough, too -- occasioanlly some crunching, but usually snagging. In the past, i had issues with the linkage itself; a little lubrication and adjustment and the thing shifted like a dream.

Took it to the shop. They disconnected the linkage from the tranny and ascertained that the provblem was not a linkage issue (since once disconnected the lever moved around pretty well), but their guess was that the probelm was with the part inside the transmission. Getting all gunked up or maybe even damaged.

Bottom line -- no way to fix unless you pull and open the tranny, which is an expen$ive proposition for a 16 year old car with 200K miles and a blue book of like $800. For all the work that takes, one might as well get a new one (not a bad idea, seeing as the pinion bearing noise has been increasing slightly in 4th and 3rd the past few years, although it's always done it in 5th).

I had the tranny pulled and the pinion bearings (and reverse gear) replaced in 1996 about 90K miles ago at a cost of about $1600, but with inflation and all that a factory remanufactured transmission would be $2500 installed according to my trusted mechanic. More than 3 times the value of the car.

Maybe it's time to put her out to pasture. I love the car dearly, but I really don't want to spend $2500 or so on a car with 200k miles, an d then spend another $1000 on some other unknown disaster a few months later.

It's a second car, used mainly for weekend errands, hauling Home Depot type stuff, hauling musical equipment, and snow driving (gotta keep the Viggen pristine!). But the alternative -- finding a used car in a lowish price range -- is tough. I've checked out a few, but many of them, even with 100k fewer miles, drive much worse than my trusty old tank.

Thoughts? Advice for this novice?
