I just did mine recently too -new boge turbos all the way around. The front ones came out easily using a trick I learned on this board. Unfasten the bottom of the shock first. Grab hold of it and bend it upwards. The shaft snaps in half and you don't have to undue the top nuts. It takes a moderate amount of effort, but it's very doable. Both sides busted for me on the first try.
Installation is a PITA, I agree. I invented a technique that worked for me with the troublesome driver's side top-nut tightening: The problem is keeping the shaft from spinning. Believe it or not, I sliced off the bottom half of the plastic piece that protects the shaft. Then I attached some vicegrips. I had to use some cloth or rubber inbetween the vicegrip and the shock to protect the shaft and also to help it get a good grip.
Then I got a deep 17mm socket on an extension and tightened the top nut.
I took off the vicegrips, carefully lined up the pieces of the plastic cover and taped them together with metal tape. Then I painted the tape black so it would blend in.
