1) They are ripping you off. There is no "custom" work needed, or at least any more than any other car. Heck, I have seen morons install aftermarket radios into Saabs without a hitch. Find a new and honest shoppe. Geez, I hate hearing things like this!
2) Sure a similar year Clarion will work. Just get the security code and you are golden. It is fast, probably cheaper, and painless. Many say the sound isn't as good with the old Clarions as with new equipment, but I have always been satisfied. Yeah, it ain't the latest and greatest and it doesn't have subwoofers. So what? I used to use a CD player attachement that plugs into the cassette deck to hear CD's, and now I use a radio transmitting one. My brother-in-law instead installed a cd-player in the trunk space hidden under the wooden panels.
My personal feeling? Call a site sponsoring junkyard, get the radio with the code, and slip it right it. This is the most painless solution for anyone who does not know alot about cars. You also won't get ripped off that way. You won't have a problem 1 week down the line and have this disreputable shoppe tell you, "oh, you needed to spend $200 for the freebastat conversion spangler and now you need to spend $300 more because you just blew up the flounder sound retainer."
What are your thoughts JustinHiFi and everyone else?
