I changed my transmission oil for the first time today. This is a procedure I've never done before. The car is an 85 900T w/150K miles. I've owned the car for 3 months.

The oil that drained out was incredibly clean! I thought it would be black like engine oil but it was a deep amber, like maple syrup. Also, it wasn't as "oily" as I was expecting. This made me think that perhaps the previous owner used somehting other than 10w-30 in the trans. Is this a quality of synthetic oils?

Also, the magnet on the plug had a fuzzy coating of metal shards. It really didn't look like a lot. Also stuck on the magnet was a larger piece that was about 1/2 the size of an apple seed.

I cleaned off the magnet and filled up the gearbox with 3 quarts of 10w-40. I didn't have any of the 30 weight at the time. This won't make a big difference will it? From the condition of the oil that drained out as the small amount of metal on the magnet ( at least I think it's a small amount ) I'm feeling confident that the previous owner took good care of the trans and it'll last me a while too.

Thanks for your ideas about the kind of oil that came out, the quality of 10w-30 in the gear box, and the amount of metal on the magnet.
