I've camped in my '92, and my dad's 1979 900 GLi, and found the back entirely adequate for 2 people... It's not a VW van, but with the rear seat folded flat, you've got a weather/bug/bear(?) proof place to sleep for the night.
Then again, the most miserable night on the road I've had was spent sleeping in the back seat (NOT folded down) in the Somerset Service Plaza on the Penna. Turnpike... Not enough room for 6' me, but the back was full of supplies for a cross country trip...
BTW, there's a Jeep Wrangler stuck in a snowbank in front of my garage... Not my jeep... Grrr.
14 inches of snow already + another 12 tonight = not enough ground clearance, Nokians aside...
