Engine turning, but wheels aren't

Okay, here's another one of the quirks in my '88 900S. Sometimes when I first start the car and drive away, the car is just crawling along. I give more gas and the car still pokes along at 5 to 10 mph, even with the RPMs up at 2000. There is no noise like belts slipping. I can either let the car warm up more, or I can slip the auto transmisison into NEUTRAL, and then back into drive, and that usually helps, although it might be more chance than anything else. If I let the car warm up for 10 minutes, it usually doesn't happen. Also, if the car was just started and working fine, alot of stop-and-go traffic in the first 15 minutes can get it to happen.
Any ideas on what this might be? Is it the transmission belts slipping (I thought I would hear something like a squeal)? Could it be the Torque-converter? Maybe the gears aren't entirely meshed in the gear box (that would probably make noise). Whatever the problem is, I'm making sure to warm the car up ALOT in the morning, and I'll probably be doing the work myself, whatever it is, since I'm short on cash.
