One of the most important things to look for when you purchase one of the babies is the condition of the transmission - the weakest link on the car. You can expect to pay ~$2500 - 3000 for a rebuild by a person who knows what they are doing (anyone who tells you otherwise has never had a transmission rebuild). Listen very carefully to the transmission when you test drive the car. Any sign of a high pitched whine when in gear can be a sign of a worn pinion, which will ultimately lead to a rebuild.
Typically, cars that have been driven conservatively tend to have fresher transmissions at higher miles. 1988 will have the smaller pinion, so listen very very carefully - this transmission is essentially the same as it was in the early 80's 900s when the car had ~100 hp, so you can usually expect on a ~180hp turbo that an agressively driven transmission will only last ~120000 miles. If in doubt, take it to a Saab Master Tech.
Also, make sure the engine had religious oil changes. The engines on these cars are bulletproof unless the oil is regularly changed every 3000 miles. A car with signs of spotty engine maintenace could mean turbocharger replacement down the road.
