1987 900T Transmission Question

Hi -
I just purchased a 1987 900T that drove fine during my testdrive, went through state and I/M just fine and the "online dealer" drove it to my office for delivery.
Not more than 4miles into my drive home, the transmission basically went neutral. It is an automatic. I was doing about 70mph and had to pull off the freeway. While stuck, I found that it would not move in any gear selection.
I got it towed home and checked the trans fluid. Looked pink in color and was what appeared to be the appropriate level according to the temperature notch.
I have always loved SAAB's and this is my first. I want to get it fixed (or possibly do some of the work myself), but do not know where to begin. I have purchased a Haynes manual, but it is not greatly detailed and even recommends that it be taken to a repair shop due to the complexity of the trans/engine/final drive combo.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
