I managed to change both handbrake cables on my '86 yesterday. Most of the work involved dismantling and re-installing interior bits and pieces to uncover the floor between the handbrake lever and the firewall. It took me two hours from start to finish, and I found 75 cents underneath the gearshift. Since everything was already taken apart, I finally installed the passenger seat heater controller in the dash where the A/C switch used to live.
I was surprised to find that things were quite straightforward in the engine compartment. It was kind of hard to see, and filthy, but only took a minute or so to route each cable from the wheel well into the passenger compartment. Without a Bentley manual, it probably would have taken me a while to notice the retainer screws in the wheel wells- they were covered with road grime.
I think I removed 17-year-old cables from the car- they were rusty, and one had broken its housing somewhere near the power steering rack. I suspect they're original, because there were some really old zip-ties holding the cables and wiring harness together on the floor.
I found the cables from a TSN sponsor for about $45.00 delivered, and the local SAAB dealership wants $14.00 EACH for the little protective rubber booties at the brake caliper end of the cables. Does anyone know where I can find better prices for these?
