There are 'floating' trickle chargers that are specifically designed to keep a battery at full charge. They don't just keep shoving current down the 'throat' of the battery - they only add charge when the battery voltage drops to the point where a charge would be useful. You can find these at autoparts stores and many Marine supply houses, as keeping boat batteries charged over long periods of inactivity is big business. Look specifically for chargers that are designed not to overcharge. They should be quite small, as they aren't designed to charge a battery, just keep a charged battery happy.
