How does the shift up light work?

How does it know when to shift up?
I notice that it comes on kinda early....if the light had its way the car would allways be at full throttle and you would controll speed simply by using a gear too high to accelertate in. How does it measure load and throttle position? it seems to take these factors, and RPM into its considerations. I notice that if it says to shift up and i hold that gear and then floor it, the light goes away. I do like how it comes on at redline at full throttle. I can catch it out of the corner of my eye and use it to get really close to the fuel cut off. Typicly if my car is at full throttle at redline, i dont want to look at my dash. Granted, i can hear when i need to shift up, its alittle extra confidence to not hit rev limiter.
