Transmission, Coupler or some other problem?

Problem! My car has been having problems going into gear in both first, second and reverse. Also, it would not allow me to down-shift into second very often. Yesterday, I was parked in neutral and couldn't get the car into gear. When I forced it in, I heard something "click" and the shifter became totally slack, and the car is stuck in third gear. It drives fine in third, but will not go into anyother gear. Is this a transmission problem or a coupler problem?
