I put the jackstands just to the rear of the jacking points (didnt want to crush the jack retaining thingies).
I was a little worried about damaging the car there, but it seemed to hold up find, with only a little bit of a dent.
I slid in from _forward_ of the driver side tire. This was easiest for me, being right handed. I ended up with my head all the way in, near the differential, and my legs hanging out.
