Welcome to 8 valve.....
CIS is Continuous Injection System. It is a mechanical injector system based on supply pressure only to each injector. The system has separate fuel lines to each injector from a central mechanical "distributor". The distributor varies the supply pressure to each injector based on a number of things. These are temperature sensors for cold engine, the O2 sensor when the engine is warm which controls the modulator valve, and the warm up regulator. An example of what is what can be found on my 85 8V web site...

The warm up hose which goes between the exhaust manifold and the air filter inlet draws warm air from around the manifold when the engine is cold which aids warm up performance. The sensor you mentioned in front of the intake is the gas bulb which measures the temperature and switches the air intake via a flap valve from the exhaust manifold location to an air intake just above the top left side of the radiator.
