@#&*%$ gas cap door!!

The gas cap door on my 85 900T was a bit loose, i.e. it closed, but kind of moved in and out an inch or so. I took it off this weekend to try and adjust the little springy wire on the door, and now the clip that attaches to the spring has come off completely and the door is just flapping in the breeze! The metal hinge has been bent a few too many times and I think will succumb to fatigue and break if I take it off again, so I'm thinking either leave the door off and go for teh jeepster look or figure a way to latch it. Anybody had this happen? Any solutions?
Thanks
John
