Its possible to drop the tranny out of the bottom and leave the engine in the bay.
Its not possible to replace the pinion bearing without disassembling the gearbox. Since the bearing has to be pressed onto pinion shaft, the shaft must come out. Assuming the shaft can be worked free of interlocking parts, and assuming that the shaft can be extracted through the differential housing (yes, chrisx, the PS rack is in the way of removing the differential) without running into the fire wall (don't know), you have to reverse the procedure, spearing the gears and synchros. Probably several times, since you may need to adjust the shimming of the pinion depth.
This is something you will want to do on a bench, unless, of course, it is a challenge which could win you the coveted, and lucrative, SaabNet Cup.
(hi, chrisx! been a while!)
