Only way to check the balljoints is to off load the upper control arms and spring using some kind of spacer in betweeen the frame and control arm.
If you lift the car up in the air without a spacer, the spring is applying so much pressure on the suspension that it's very difficult to check for play.
It takes about 1/2 hour for a Saab shop to check ball joint play.
