Battery charging light on

I had a battery replaced on a '93 900s this afternoon. The 'friend' installed the battery cables wrong, and now the 'battery' light in the dash is on. A voltage regulator test (at the battery: car not stopped, then started, to check the VR output.) It came up 11.7 volts.
Because of the very temporarily crossed battery wires, would the problem be the voltage regulator being NG/fried, or are the diodes in the alternator fried?
Please answer ASAP, so I know what to fix tommorow. Thanks!!
