No-name's diagonostic method is right on. Read it before it expires.
The typical symptoms of a bad HB is a short, very loud squeal when you first start the car. This isn't a belt squeal, but a 'wake the neighbor's' squeal. It will be very short at first, and may not be at every start. In a few days, the squeal will be at every start, and will last longer and longer. Eventually there will be a race to see if the balancer comes apart before it chews into the oil pump housing.
If you don't hear a squeal on the first startup of the day, you're probably fine. Drawing a line on the pulley face is a great idea (I use chalk, but a grease pencil will work just fine).
