That's a common symptom of a worn wheel bearing. Diagnosis of that is removing the wheel assembly (brake caliper off, CV pulled out) and seeing if it makes noise when turning freely. Usually a grinding noise.
Nevertheless, this should not be applicable to your situation. You probably ground up the teeth on the inner drive when you went into first. I'd suggest replacing the drive axle. (see: sobstory.com for a good source on the 'net)
