DOT 4 will work in cars designed for DOT 3 or DOT 4. In general, DOT4 is better. Use DOT 4, and don't worry about the color.
Brake fluid is available in colors. You can switch between colors each time you flush the system, so it's obvious when new fluid is coming out. I've never had a problem telling when the new fluid is coming out - dirty, brown gunk turns clear.
Don't use DOT 5. Here's a case where a larger number isn't better, just different. DOT5 won't work with some systems because it's incompatible with the materials.
