The hose after the valve should be under a negative pressure under idle conditions with the AIC valve operating normally. After a decade or so, the hose can weaken from the oil that mists in from the PCV and collapse under negative pressure. A few years ago, Dave New suggested putting in a spring of the right size to keep it from collapsing, which is not a bad idea.
The hose upstream of the AIC valve shouldn't collapse unless there's something stuck in it (wombat, F-16, Elvis or the like).
If you have a friendly pick-n-pull handy, you can get AIC hoses from N/A 16-valve 900s pretty cheaply.
