tiny metal shavings in gearbox oil! please help

I have an 87 900T with 124,000 on the clock... I was heading on a long trip this weekend, and my car started vibrating horribly over 60mph, and the vibration increased with speed. The whole car shakes, feels like it in coming from the (pinion) end of the gearbox. I did a U-turn ASAP and came all the way back home (200miles), trying to be as easy as I could.
I thought it might be an inner driver on the driver side, since I just replaced the axle on the pass. side about a month ago. I take out the driveshaft, and there is some grease in there, although it seems like less than ideal. I continue to take out the inner driver, look at it, and it looks fine! But when I spin the bearing, it sounds 2-3x louder than 'normal', and there's some brass colored metal flecks on/in the bearing. I then pull the tranny oil drain pan out from under the car, and it's full of metal! Either aluminum or brass (non-metallic) So much metal in there that you can't shine a bright flashlight thru a clear plastic bottle with this oil in it. I need opinions on if this transmission is toasted or maybe not? I was having some problems with getting into 2nd gear recently if I was over 4000rpm (grind) Is all this metal a ground up synchro? Think I ruined my bearings? I have an extra (good) transmission but I really really really don't want to change it out unless I have to. Anybody have any simmilar experience or info? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, gearbox oil was changed 12,000miles ago and was normal then. My poor car.
