front end shimmy Posted by mag [Email] (#1906) [Profile/Gallery] (more from mag) on Sat, 19 Apr 2003 21:10:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The front end of this 1986 900T has started to shimmy, oscillating from side to side one cycle with each turn of the wheels. The motion translates into the steering. I thought it might be the left front tire gone out of round, and swapped it, and that didn't alter the shimmy.
The left front outer CV boot is torn, and much of the grease has been ejected.
What could cause the shimmy? Would losing the CV joint grease and subsequent rapid abnormal wear or loose parts cause it? If this is a normal symptom of a bad outer (or inner) joint, is there a way to identify which joint is at fault BEFORE disassembling? (the better to locate replacement parts.)
Again, thanks.
