So naive me goes to the Saab dealer recommended machine shop after having JBweld-filled the four shallow pits on my 2.1L head I just pulled off. I bring my Bentley with me. I drop off the head and the guy asks me for the camshafts. I say they are still at home, and go back to get them.

When I return the owner says the valve seats are bad. He's released one of the intake valves, and holds it against the seat, and uses a flashlight to show that light can be seen through the gap. I tell him he can cut the valve seats but not the valves, definately not the exhasut valves as they have a thin coat of stelite and can be hand lapped only. He tells me he must cut the valves. I say absolutely not. I show him the info on exhaust valves in Bentley. He says thats bullsh*t, and that they've done hundreds of these heads and never had a problem. I tell him removing the stelite won't immediately cause the valves to burn up, but will significantly shorten their lives. He says he know what he's doing and I can do it his way, or take my head and leave. I should have taken the engine head and left.

Instead I tell him, not to do anything yet, I will call him. I go to the Saab dealer. I ask the dealer if they know about the stelite coating. They say they are not sure but seem to recall something about the exhaust valves being filled with calcium. "Sodium, you mean?" I say. They say if the valve needs more than a couple thou removed, the valve should be replaced anyways. They say again they highly recommend the machine shop.

Back I go to the machine shop, and say the Saab dealer really likes you guys, so I will go ahead.

Later in the car, driving to Saab Depot for some other parts to finish my Saab repair, and I am obsessing over the exhasut valves. I call the machine shop. I tell them to agree that they will not remove more than .002" off the exhaust valves, if more is req'd to replace the valve. They finally agree, but I think they are just humouring me.

Now I'm off to photocopy the stuff out oif Bentley + from Tom Townsend's site. I'm going to stop at the machine shop tomorrow morning and tell them not to cut the exhaust valves. If they refuse to listen, I'll take the head and go elsewhere. What ever happened to the customer is always right????

They also said the JB-weld method of filling the pits was BS. But I got them to leave that alone at least.

Jeff
