Blown gasket / coolant in turbo. DIY?

Car is 87' 8 valve, 155 HP. Recently I found out that my head gasket was blown, the proof of the condition being coolant spraying out of the seals around the turbo when trying to start. Obviously the turbo's filled with the stuff so exhaust can't pass, alas no start.
What I've obviously got to do is get the gasket changed, which is the reason I'm posting this. Is this a reasonable DIY job (following the Haynes book) with few surprises? Alternatively I could take it to the local Saab service center and let them do it for about $500 (++).
Another issue I'm unsure about is the fact that the turbo is coolant filled. The mix is about 40% glycol, will this damage the turbo? Obviously there's no economy in paying for a new gasket if all I get afterwards is blue smoke. Will it possibly evaporate if I unscrew the spark plugs?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Jimmy Schmincke
