I would check the 1 1/4"/32mm axle nut. If this has loosened, up you could have damaged your wheel bearing. Even if the big nut is tight, the bearing itself may be making this noise, if there is space between the bearing and the snap rings that hold it in the steering spindle. Also, if you have had a recent wheel bearing replacement, the snap ring might have not been securely locked in the groove, thus allowing the bearing to move in the housing making a loud snap just as you describe.

In addition to the various front suspension items John H. recommended checking, I would carefully inspect your lower control arms for hairline cracks near the inner mounting points. These control arms can snap when backing and turning. Yours might be in the process of cracking(this is a long shot and I do suspect that the noise is from the bearing). However, a broken control arm is a potentially dangerous fault, but at least they rarely break while going forward on the highway.
