If you want details you can read my post earlier today. The abstract though is that my 1988 900 S with 5speed transmission most likely needs a new transmission. The primary evidence pointing towars said conclusion is that at present the car only moves when in 5th gear. My wife today said, "So it only goes in 5th - what's the big deal - it still goes doesn't it?" Also of relevance is the property I posses which could be politely summarized as: "not flush with cash."
I found today that Andrew's of Princeton sells rebuilt 5spd's for $750. I also know that U-Pull-R-Parts sells transmissions for the mighty fine price of $70. I'd appreciate your commentary on the folowing options I've come up with:
[1]Buy the Andrews rebuilt and put it in myself. Advantages: I paid for the rebuilt so presumably it isn't crap and will not fail in 300 miles. Disadvantages: $750 and I'll have to install it, it will still be an S.
[2] find a rusty, beat up 900 turbo and install the manual transmission from that car. Advantages: making an S into turbo, possibly cheaper than $750, making S into a turbo. Disadvantages: Waiting for one to show up, someone has (probably) already beat the crap out of the drivetran I want to install.
[3] pull a used transmission out of the u-pull-it-yard. Advantages: price is $70 low. Disadvantages: who was the last driver? Why was it junked?
Supposing I do go the cheapskate route, are there good ways to see if a transmission is crappy before installing it. Suposing I did pull it at the junkyard, would cracking it open and looking at the bearings/synchros be a trivial job? Should I be scared of transmission removal/reinstallation? I really like the "used turbo" option but I don't know of any $300 trubos in minnesota right now.
oh, why is only 5th working? What are the guesses as to the broken part? could it still be something else (like the shift linkage)?
thanks for your thoughts
