One time my '88 900S died on me and I coudn't restart it. The symptoms included the engine losing power while driving - nothing I did with the gas pedal gave it more power. In that case, it turned out that the fuel filter had plugged. Replacing it took care of the problem until the car passed on from old age and rust.
It's possible that you stirred up some sediment in the tank and that aggrivated an already marginal fuel filter.
Like JohnK says, it's also possible that the AMM is bad. Try pulling the plug off of the AMM and try to start it. It should run in limp-home mode.
Check the rubber boot that connects the AMM to the throttle body for cracks or loose hose clamps.
Your description of starting it with starter fluid and the high idle sure makes it sound like a huge vacuum leak, though. On a 13-year old car, even a non-turbo, the vacuum hoses could easily become brittle from years of heat and have cracks that you wouldn't necessarily be able to readily see. The rubber bushings that hold the valve nipples do get oil-soaked and shrink, letting in all sorts of unmetered air. You may want to consider replacing the vacuum hoses on general principles and replacing the rubber bushings if you can easily pull the vacuum nipples out of them.
Try pinching the vacuum hoses to the ELCD canister while somebody cranks the car, too.
There are a lot of things that it could be. The things I mentioned above are a good starting point. Check the cheap stuff first.
