To check the balljoints, you must unload the suspension by putting spacers between the upper control arms and the car body. I use old spark plugs. Only then can you squeeze the balljoints with a big pliers and pry them with a tire iron to detect slop. To check the wheel bearing you must remove the steering spindle from the axle to see if there is any slack between the inner circlip and the bearing race. If your bearing is snapping you might be able to press it against the outboard circlip without a hydraulic press, but a press is the right tool. Only apply pressure to to outer race or you will destroy the bearing.
While I suspect your problem is the bearing, visually inspect the control arm bushings for obvious disintegration. Whenever you have a wheel off, it is a good idea to clean off the lower control arms and inspect them for any hairline cracks over near the inside mounts. If they are cracked it is only a matter of time before they snap when backing up and turning.
