Stephen,

The BG does NOT smell like the normal (GL5) 80W-90 gear oil I've got. It's lighter in color & "finger feel," as well as the ever-popular "bottle-shake" test. But it seems to run/drip across silicone-release-coated paper at close to the same rate as the the GL5. I also did a smell-off between the SS2, Mobil 1 0W-40, Saab "original" (A3/B3 Euro) 5W-30 semi syn, & some unknown bulk 5W-30 (claimed to be Valvoline semi syn) run for 20mi in my 9-3. The M1 & Saab were both way off, but the single-run bulk mystery oil was actually kinda close. The SS2 bottle I have is dated 1995 & says it meets GL4, along with a bunch of manufacturers' specs, so it may be different from the current formulation.

A couple of side notes:
* The shop that did the work normally adds BG's Multi-Gear Concentrate to all 10W-30 tranny fills (I'm not sure about the GL5 fills), but said it wasn't required with the synthetic SS2.
* Their flush procedure consisted of filling with 10W-30 & a can of flush (tranny flush? engine flush? I'm not sure, but I can try to find out if you'd like), driving the car for a little bit (maybe 1/2 hr?), refilling with only 10W-30, driving for a little bit more, & then final filling with SS2.
* I got the same warning from Tom when I told him what I'd done, but it's been 25k+ miles since then, & I still have excellent shifting with zero fluid loss. I'm happy so far.
* About 5k miles after the changeover, I accidently knocked out the shift-shaft seal & threw out about a qt+ of SS2. When I finally discovered the problem, I added enough 10W-30 to get me back to the shop for a seal replacement, where they drained my mixture & refilled it with SS2. It hasn't been drained/refilled since then, mostly because:
1)it's synthetic; 2)it's expensive; 3)it's shifting great.
* Your car may react completely differently to the same treatment. (sorry; gotta keep the lawyers happy ...)

Have you looked at the BG site for a listing of ingredients? I haven't checked, so I don't know what they do/don't list. If the don't list anything, I can tell you what my GL4 SS2 says.
