Can someone answer a spring related question?

What is the main purpose of the rubber on the ends of the springs? I assume
it keeps the noise down and possible wear (with metal on metal meet). I'm
trying to find replacement ends that are not as thick as the ones on the
car (trying to lower it). Yes, I have Intrax but after putting the Konis
in, the car is sitting 1/2" to 1" higher. Thanks.
