I did a conversion on both my '86 and '87 900 turbos. I just went to Pep Boys and bought the kits. Total price was about $30 a piece. I was working in a dealership at the time (not SAAB, but another Sweedish car company that shall remain nameless) so I was able to evacuate all the R-12 with the recycling equipment there. As far as replacement parts went, I did not have to replace any. I just took all the R-12 out, installed the new adapter ports for the R-134, and charged it up using the Ester oil charge that came with the kit, and then completed the charge with a couple of cans of the R-134 refrigerant. I have not had a problem since. I noticed that my '87 does get colder, but then again, they are 2 different cars.
And, for those of you who think that working on that other Sweedish car is sacralidge, just think of it this way, they are always breaking down so there was always plenty of work for me. The SAABs didn't break so I couldn't make any money on them.
