12.5V is just too low. I recently went through a similar scenario - it turned out to be the ground wire(s) from the alternator to the block. I had 12.4V at the battery. But when running a voltage drop test (check Bentley) discovered there was 17V at the back of the alternator. $0.39 of 8awg wire and four connectors from Home Depot and I now have two very good grounds and no battery problems. But at 12.5V I suspect your alternator has passed. Have you checked/replaced your voltage regulator? Waayyy cheaper and easier than the whole alternator, and oddly enough, these fail low (US cars fail high and boil batteries). Just be sure and only get the Bosch part - not the crappy NAPA Eichlin one.
