Replacement of Rear Shock Absorbers - Help

I am trying to replace the rear shock absorbers on a 1988 900. After removing the upper and lower bush bolts, I found the bush to be very tight in the mount and the old shock difficult to remove.
I am now having a great deal of difficulty in getting the new shock into the lower mount and lined up with the bolt hole.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
