There is a steel ring between the back end of the cat and the pipe. When I bought a cat (flange end had rutsed away on original) and exhaust system from Trollhattan several years back, the ring that came with the system didn't really fit well. I went to a dealer and bought the factory piece at $30, it was a thicker ring of stainless steel as opposed to a smaller, cheaper dull steel that came with the system.
I too was never happy with the sound either, wasn't sure if the factory ring didn't fit the after market system or if the aftermarket system was not of the quality of the original. It had a growl and it seemed to leak at the cat until it heated up.
Now its time to do a cat back replacement again, I'm going to check with Jim at sobstory before I go at it again. You might e mail him.
Good luck
